150260 at Shrewsbury on 2nd April 2016

Arriva Trains Wales Class 150 DMU No. 150260 awaits departure from platform 5 at Shrewsbury with the 1V37 08:30 Manchester Piccadilly to Milford Haven service on 2nd April 2016. Those familiar with rail operations at Shrewsbury may be puzzled as to how a Manchester to South Wales service came to be using a south-facing bay platform. 1V37 originally left Manchester Piccadilly worked by Class 175 DMU No. 175116, but after a prolonged stop at Shrewsbury the conductor advised the service was cancelled due to a door fault on the train. As passengers exited onto the platform a further announcement was made to advise that a replacement train would arrive at platform 5. Around 40 minutes after the scheduled departure time, 150260 rolled into the platform, presumably from Abbey Foregate Sidings. As it did, passengers were advised that to reduce the delay, the train would miss most of the booked stops between Shrewsbury and Newport, calling only at Hereford. A very spirited run to Newport followed, and the 45 minute deficit on leaving Shrewsbury was reduced to 19 minutes by Newport where I alighted. I subsequently found out that the train reached Milford Haven on time thanks to a quick reversal at Swansea and a good bit of recovery time at the destination!
